ishte — 'was / it was'
Ishte is the third-person singular imperfect of jam: 'he/she/it was'. It describes a state in the past — the full jam past set is isha, ishe, ishte, ishim, ishit, ishin.
Dje ishte e hënë.
Yesterday was Monday.
Ishte shumë e shijshme.
It was delicious.
Dasma ishte e bukur.
The wedding was beautiful.
Filmi ishte i gjatë.
The movie was long.

The trip was good.
Pritja ishte e gjatë.
The wait was long.
kam + participle — 'I did / I have done'
Albanian's workhorse past: kam 'I have' plus the participle. Kam vizituar 'I visited', kam blerë 'I bought'. Hear the pattern:
Kam humbur çelësin.
I've lost the key.
Kam fjetur keq.
I slept badly.
Kam humbur çantën.
I've lost my bag.
Kam rezervuar biletën.
I've booked the ticket.
Kam rezervuar një dhomë.
I've reserved a room.
Kam kaluar provimin.
I've passed the exam.

I ordered fish.
Kam harruar fjalëkalimin.
I've forgotten the password.

I've broken my leg.
Kam lënë duhanin.
I've quit smoking.
Kush ka marrë peshqirin tim?
Who took my towel?
Më kanë vjedhur çantën.
My bag has been stolen.
Keni marrë drejtimin e gabuar.
You've taken the wrong direction.
do të — the future
do të + verb builds the future: do të shkoj 'I will go'. It never changes shape — only the verb after it does.
Nesër do të ketë diell.
Tomorrow will be sunny.
Do të blej një shtëpi.
I'm going to buy a house.
Sipas parashikimit të motit do të bjerë shi.
According to the forecast it will rain.
Sa netë do të qëndroni?
How many nights will you stay?
Recognizing the aorist
Menus, announcements, and stories use short one-word past forms: erdhi 'came', ra 'fell'. You don't need to produce them yet — recognize them:
| Aorist | Base verb | Real sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Ushqimi erdhi shpejt. | vjen → erdhi 'came' | Ushqimi erdhi shpejt. |
| Pardje ra shi. | bie → ra 'fell' | Pardje ra shi. |
| Blerja u bë dje. | bëhet → u bë 'became' | Blerja u bë dje. |
| Çfarë ndodhi? | ndodh → ndodhi 'happened' | Çfarë ndodhi? |
| Evakuimi filloi. | fillon → filloi 'started' | Evakuimi filloi. |
| Projekti përfundoi. | përfundon → përfundoi 'ended' | Projekti përfundoi. |
Same sentence in both Albanian columns so the left column stays visible while the right one plays audio.
