Noun first, adjective second — and matching endings

Arabic puts the adjective after the noun, and the adjective must match the noun in gender and definiteness. 'The new book' = الكتاب الجديد — both definite. 'A new book' = كتاب جديد — both indefinite.

PhraseTransliterationEnglishNote
كتاب جديدkitāb jadīda new bookmasc. indefinite
الكتاب الجديدal-kitāb al-jadīdthe new bookmasc. definite — ال on both
سيارة جميلةsayyāra jamīlaa beautiful carfem. — adjective takes ة
السيارة الجميلةas-sayyāra l-jamīlathe beautiful carfem. definite
مدرسة كبيرةmadrasa kabīraa big schoolfem. — كبير → كبيرة

Feminine agreement = adjective + ة: جديد → جديدة, جميل → جميلة, كبير → كبيرة.

Two meanings of 'noun + adjective'

Compare: البيت الكبير = 'the big house' (a noun phrase — adjective definite too). البيت كبير = 'the house is big' (a full nominal sentence — adjective indefinite). The presence or absence of ال on the adjective changes the whole meaning.

ArabicTransliterationMeaningType
البيت الكبيرal-bayt al-kabīrthe big housenoun phrase

Iḍāfa — possession without 'of'

To say 'the boy's book' Arabic literally says 'book the-boy': كتاب الولد. The chain — first noun + definite second noun — is called iḍāfa ('addition'). Two rules: the first noun never takes ال, and the whole chain is definite if the last noun is. 'A boy's book' = كتاب ولد (both indefinite).

ChainTransliterationEnglishNote
كتاب الولدkitāb al-waladthe boy's bookfirst noun loses ال

Chaining three nouns is fine: باب بيت المعلم 'the door of the teacher's house'.

Describing more and most — beginner level

'More X' uses the pattern أَفْعَل afʿal: أكبر akbar 'bigger', أفضل afḍal 'better', أجمل ajmal 'more beautiful'. With من 'than': أكبر من akbar min 'bigger than'. For 'the biggest/most', make it definite or use it in iḍāfa: أفضل فندق 'the best hotel'.
