What is Modern Standard Arabic?

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the standard variety used across the Arab world in writing, news broadcasts, formal speeches, education, and official documents. It is essentially the modern descendant of Classical Arabic — the language of the Qur'an — with vocabulary extended for modern life.

Here is the honest picture for beginners: native speakers do not use pure MSA for casual everyday conversation. Everyday spoken Arabic varies by region — Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Maghrebi, and others — and those dialects can differ noticeably from MSA and from each other. MSA is not any single region's home dialect.

What this course teaches — and what it doesn't

This course teaches MSA only. We deliberately do not mix in Saudi, Egyptian, Levantine, or Gulf colloquial forms — even though our audio voice is recorded on an ar-SA (Saudi Arabic) locale, the text it reads is standard MSA. A dialect form may appear only inside a clearly labeled comparison note when it genuinely helps learning.

How to use this course

The 14 articles move from script and sounds to grammar to words and conversation to practical Arabic. Read them in order if you're new — each builds on the last. Arabic text is always the canonical content; the transliteration next to it is a consistent reading aid, and the ▶ button plays a native-style female voice.
