Thanks — obrigado or obrigada?

Portuguese "thank you" changes with the speaker's gender — not the listener's:

  • Obrigado — commonly said by a male speaker (literally "obliged", masculine form).
  • Obrigada — commonly said by a female speaker.

It's about who is speaking, not who you're thanking. You'll hear both constantly — match it to yourself.
