estar a + infinitive — the European progressive

To say "I am doing X right now", Portugal uses:

estar (conjugated) + a + infinitive

  • Estou a estudar. — I am studying.
  • Estou a comer. — I am eating.
  • Está a chover. — It's raining.
  • Estamos a aprender português. — We are learning Portuguese.

Brazilian Portuguese prefers estar + gerund — estou estudando, estou comendo — and you'll hear it in Brazilian media. In Portugal, estar a + infinitive is the everyday standard, and this course uses it. You may also hear the gerund form in the south of Portugal (Alentejo, the Algarve) — regional, not a learner default.
