The core particles
| Particle | Core meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| na | already · now · by this time | Kumain na ako. — I've eaten already. |
| pa | still · yet · first (before doing) | Gutom pa ako. — I'm still hungry. |
| lang / lamang | only · just | Sandali lang. — Just a moment. |
| din / rin | also · too | Kumain din siya. — She ate too. |
| ba | question flag | Kumakain ba siya? — Is she eating? |
| naman | softener / on the other hand / in return | Sige naman. — Oh, go ahead. |
Two different things here: lang/lamang are just the short and long forms of one word (use either). But din/rin and daw/raw are sound-conditioned — the r- form follows a vowel or w/y, the d- form follows a consonant.
na vs pa — the aspect pair
na says 'already / now' and pa says 'still / yet' — they cover the territory English handles with tense and 'already/still/not yet'.

ba — the question flag
Yes/no questions in Tagalog don't need word-order gymnastics: insert ba after the first word and the statement becomes a question. One wrinkle: the pronoun ka 'you' slides in before ba (Kumakain ka ba?), while other words follow it (Kumakain ba siya?).
