What pinyin is (and isn't)
Hanyu Pinyin writes Mandarin sounds in Latin letters: initial + final + tone mark. It was designed in the PRC but is the international standard — UN names, Taipei street signs, and dictionaries all use it. It is a pronunciation aid, not a writing system; real Chinese is written with characters.
- Initial = the consonant: n-, h-, zh-, q-
- Final = the vowel part: -i, -ao, -an, -üe
- Tone mark = the accent over the vowel: ā á ǎ à a (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, neutral)
| Taiwan Mandarin | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 你好 | nǐ hǎo | hello |
| 謝謝 | xièxie | thank you |
| 你好嗎 | nǐ hǎo ma | how are you? (嗎 is a neutral-tone question particle) |
| 人 | rén | person — notice the r- initial |
Initials that don't match English
Six initials read differently from English. Two families matter most:
- j / q / x — made with the tongue flat against the front of the palate, like a hissy jee / chee / shee. 家 jiā, 七 qī, 西 xī.
- zh / ch / sh / r — 'retroflex': tongue curled slightly back. 知 zhī, 吃 chī, 是 shì, 人 rén. In Taiwan these are pronounced softer than on the Mainland — often close to z/c/s with the tongue less curled.
- z / c / s — z = 'ds' (在 zài), c = 'ts' (菜 cài), s = 's' (三 sān).
| Initial | Sounds like | Example | Reading — meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| zh | j in 'judge' (tongue back) | 知道 | zhīdào — 'to know' |
| ch | ch in 'church' (tongue back) | 吃 | chī — 'to eat' |
| sh | sh in 'ship' (tongue back) | 是 | shì — 'to be' |
| r | s in 'pleasure' / soft r | 人 | rén — 'person' |
| j | jee (front of palate) | 家 | jiā — 'home/family' |
| q | chee (front of palate) | 七 | qī — 'seven' |
| x | shee (front of palate) | 西門町 | Xīméndīng — 'Ximending' |
| c | ts in 'cats' | 菜 | cài — 'dish/vegetable' |
| z | ds in 'beds' | 在 | zài — 'at/to be at' |
Finals to watch
Three finals cause most mistakes:
- ü — rounded like French 'u' or German 'ü'. Written plain u after j/q/x/y (so 去 qù is really qü). 女 nǚ, 魚 yú, 月 yuè.
- e (alone) — not 'eh': an unrounded back vowel between 'uh' and 'err'. 了 le, 的 de, 喝 hē.
- -i after z/c/s and zh/ch/sh/r — a 'buzz' vowel that barely counts as a vowel: 子 zi, 次 cì, 四 sì, 知 zhī, 吃 chī, 是 shì, 日 rì.
- Special finals — 二 èr ('ar' with a curled tongue), 五 wǔ, 一 yī.
| Final | Approximation | Example | Reading — meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ü | French 'u' — say 'ee' with rounded lips | 女 | nǚ — 'woman/female' |
| e | unrounded 'uh' from the throat | 喝 | hē — 'to drink' |
| i (after z/c/s) | buzzed 'zzz' | 四 | sì — 'four' |
| i (after zh/ch/sh/r) | buzzed 'zhrr' | 十 | shí — 'ten' |
| er | 'ar' with curled tongue | 二 | èr — 'two' |
Zhuyin (ㄅㄆㄇ) — Taiwan's own phonetic system
Zhuyin — also called Bopomofo after its first four symbols — is a set of 37 phonetic characters used only for sound. Taiwan's schools teach it before characters; children's books print it beside every character; and most Taiwanese type with it on phones and computers.
As a learner you don't need to write Zhuyin — pinyin is enough for this course — but recognizing it pays off when you see signs, menus, or a friend typing. A few common symbols:
| Zhuyin | Pinyin | Example | Reading — meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ㄋ | n- | 你 | ㄋㄧˇ nǐ — 'you' |
| ㄏ | h- | 好 | ㄏㄠˇ hǎo — 'good' |
| ㄒ | x- | 謝 | ㄒㄧㄝˋ xiè — 'thank' (in 謝謝) |
| ㄊ | t- | 台 | ㄊㄞˊ tái — 'Tai' (of Taiwan) |
| ㄗ | z- | 在 | ㄗㄞˋ zài — 'at' |
| ㄔ | ch- | 吃 | ㄔ chī — 'to eat' |
Tone marks
Pinyin marks tones on the main vowel of each syllable:
- ā 1st — high and flat
- á 2nd — rising, like a question
- ǎ 3rd — dips low
- à 4th — sharp falling
- a no mark — light neutral tone
The tones article covers how they sound and the tone-change rules.
Mini practice
In pinyin, which letter is pronounced like 'ts'?
c — 菜 cài (dish/vegetable). And z = 'ds' (在 zài).
How is ü written after j, q, x, y?
As a plain u — 去 qù is pronounced qü. The two dots only appear after n and l (女 nǚ, 綠 lǜ).
What is ㄅㄆㄇ?
Zhuyin / Bopomofo — Taiwan's own 37-symbol phonetic alphabet, taught in schools and used in keyboards. This course uses pinyin, but Zhuyin explains Taiwanese textbooks and phone input.
How is the letter e pronounced alone (的, 了)?
Not 'eh' — an unrounded back vowel between 'uh' and 'err': 的 de, 喝 hē.
