Counting things — classifiers

Thai counts nouns with a classifier between number and noun — like "two glasses of water" but for everything. Pattern: noun + number + classifier. These eight cover most situations:

Mini practice

Q1. How do you say 21?

ยี่สิบเอ็ด (yii-sip-et) — 20 has its own form ยี่สิบ, and ones-place 1 becomes เอ็ด.

Q2. How do you ask "What time is it?"

กี่โมงครับ/คะ (kii moong).

Q3. What goes between the number and the noun when counting?

A classifier — e.g. น้ำ 2 แก้ว (two glasses of water). When unsure, use อัน.

Q4. What's the Thai for 10,000?

หมื่น (muen) — it has its own word; 100,000 is แสน (saen).

Q5. How do you bargain at a market?

ลดได้ไหมครับ/คะ — "can you lower it?"

Summary

  • Regular system with two quirks: เอ็ด for ones, ยี่สิบ for 20.
  • Prices: เท่าไหร่ asks, ~บาท answers; bargaining = markets only.
  • Days are วัน + planet name; classifiers go noun + number + classifier.
  • Next: 100 travel phrases.
