What a classifier does
When a noun is counted or pointed at, Vietnamese puts a classifier between the number/demonstrative and the noun:
number + classifier + noun — hai con chó (two dogs), ba người bạn (three friends), quyển sách này (this book).
Think of it like English 'a cup of coffee', 'a sheet of paper', 'a pair of shoes' — except Vietnamese uses them much more broadly.
The high-frequency classifiers
| Classifier | Used for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| cái | things, tools, objects in general | cái bàn — a table |
| con | animals, children, some objects (con dao - knife) | con chó — a dog |
| người | people | hai người bạn — two friends |
| quyển / cuốn | books, notebooks (both forms exist) | quyển sách — a book |
| chiếc | vehicles, clothes, furniture pieces | chiếc xe — a vehicle |
| cây | long thin things, plants, pens | cây bút — a pen |
| quả | fruits, round objects | quả cam — an orange |
| cốc / ly | cups and glasses — cốc (N), ly (S) | cốc cà phê — a coffee (N) |
| tờ | paper, newspapers | tờ giấy — a sheet of paper |
| tấm | tickets, photos, cards | tấm vé — a ticket |
| đôi | pairs (shoes, chopsticks) | đôi giày — a pair of shoes |
người is both a noun ('person') and a classifier ('counter for people'). Learn cái/con/người/cuốn first — that covers most daily counting.
When classifiers actually appear
Classifiers are frequent but not mandatory everywhere. Patterns to internalize:
- With numbers: hai người (two people), ba cái bàn (three tables).
- With 'this/that': cái này (this one), cuốn sách đó (that book) — the classifier anchors the demonstrative.
- Often dropped casually: in quick speech, numbers alone can carry ('hai' for two drinks). Learn the explicit form first.
Counting in action

Beginner rules of thumb
- People → người: hai người, ba người.
- Animals → con: con chó, con mèo.
- Most objects → cái: cái này, cái đó, cái bàn.
- Books → cuốn/quyển: cuốn sách.
- Don't overthink: wrong classifier is understood; silence is not.
Summary
number + classifier + noun: người for people, con for animals, cái for things, cuốn/quyển for books. Classifiers also anchor 'this/that'. Next: the core vocabulary — 100+ words to build on.
