Masculine and feminine
Every Punjabi noun is masculine or feminine — a book, a house, happiness. The big tendencies:
- Words ending in -ā are usually masculine: ਮੁੰਡਾ muṇḍā 'boy', ਘੋੜਾ ghoṛā 'horse'. But it's a tendency, not a law — ਘਰ ghar 'house' is masculine with no -ā at all.
- Words ending in -ī are usually feminine: ਕੁੜੀ kuṛī 'girl', ਕਿਤਾਬ kitāb 'book', ਘੜੀ ghaṛī 'clock/watch'.
When you're unsure, learn the noun with an adjective or 'my' attached — the agreement will remind you of the gender.
| Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|
| ਮੁੰਡਾ muṇḍā — boy | ਕੁੜੀ kuṛī — girl |
| ਆਦਮੀ ādmī — man | ਔਰਤ aurat — woman |
| ਘਰ ghar — house | ਦੁਕਾਨ dukān — shop |
| ਦਿਨ din — day | ਰਾਤ rāt — night |
| ਕੁੱਤਾ kuttā — dog | ਬਿੱਲੀ billī — cat |
Gender can't be guessed perfectly from the ending; when in doubt, check a dictionary. 'House' ਘਰ is masculine, 'book' ਕਿਤਾਬ is feminine — the ending won't always tell you.
Plurals
Plurals are simpler than English plurals — there's no -s rule to get wrong:
- Masculine nouns often change -ā → -e in the plural: ਮੁੰਡਾ → ਮੁੰਡੇ muṇḍe 'boys'. Others don't visibly change: ਘਰ ghar 'house(s)'.
- Feminine nouns usually add -ਆਂ -āṁ: ਕੁੜੀ → ਕੁੜੀਆਂ kuṛīāṁ 'girls', ਕਿਤਾਬ → ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ kitābāṁ 'books'.
| Singular | Plural | Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| ਮੁੰਡਾ muṇḍā — boy | ਮੁੰਡੇ muṇḍe — boys | -ā → -e |
| ਘਰ ghar — house | ਘਰ ghar — houses | unchanged (common for m. nouns without -ā) |
| ਕੁੜੀ kuṛī — girl | ਕੁੜੀਆਂ kuṛīāṁ — girls | -ī → -īāṁ |
| ਕਿਤਾਬ kitāb — book | ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ kitābāṁ — books | +āṁ |
Postpositions — the little words after nouns
Where English uses prepositions before the noun ('in the house'), Punjabi uses postpositions after it — literally 'house in':
| Punjabi | Transliteration | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| ਵਿਚ | vic | in, inside | ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ghar vic — in the house |
| ਉੱਤੇ | utte | on | ਟੇਬਲ ਉੱਤੇ ṭebal utte — on the table |
| ਤੋਂ | toṁ | from, than | ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਤੋਂ amritsar toṁ — from Amritsar |
| ਨਾਲ | nāl | with | ਦੋਸਤ ਨਾਲ dost nāl — with a friend |
| ਲਈ | laī | for | ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ mere laī — for me |
| ਨੂੰ | nūṁ | to / marks the object | ਉਸ ਨੂੰ us nūṁ — to him/her |
| ਦਾ / ਦੀ / ਦੇ | dā / dī / de | of — 's | ਇੰਡੀਆ ਦਾ inḍiā dā — of India (m.) |
ਮੈਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ
I go to school
ਸਕੂਲ has no postposition — 'go' often drops the 'to' before places
ਬੱਸ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ
The bus comes from Amritsar
Amritsar — from — comes
ਇਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਹੈ
This is for me
ਮੇਰਾ 'my' → ਮੇਰੇ before ਲਈ (oblique)
The oblique form — nouns bend before postpositions
Before a postposition, many nouns shift to an oblique form — typically -ā → -e. This is beginner-level depth: meet it, recognize it, and don't stress over producing it perfectly yet.
| Direct | Oblique (+ postposition) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ਮੁੰਡਾ muṇḍā | ਮੁੰਡੇ ਨਾਲ muṇḍe nāl | with the boy |
| ਕੁੱਤਾ kuttā | ਕੁੱਤੇ ਨੂੰ kutte nūṁ | to the dog |
| ਘਰ ghar | ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ghar vic | in the house (no visible change) |
Feminine nouns mostly don't change in the oblique: ਕੁੜੀ ਨਾਲ kuṛī nāl 'with the girl'. For -ā masculines, -e is the oblique ending — ਮੁੰਡੇ ਨਾਲ, never ਮੁੰਡਾ ਨਾਲ.
Possession with ਦਾ dā
English 'of'/'-s' is ਦਾ dā — and it agrees with the thing owned, not the owner:
- ਦਾ — masculine singular owned: ਪਿਓ ਦਾ ਘਰ pio dā ghar 'father's house'
- ਦੀ — feminine owned: ਪਿਓ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ pio dī kitāb 'father's book'
- ਦੇ — masculine plural owned: ਪਿਓ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ pio de bacce 'father's children'
| Punjabi | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ | pañjāb dī rājdhānī | Punjab's capital (rājdhānī is f.) |
| ਮੁੰਡੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ | muṇḍe dā nām | the boy's name |
| ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਓ ਦੀ ਦੁਕਾਨ | mere pio dī dukān | my father's shop |
Location and direction phrases
| Punjabi | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ਘਰ ਵਿਚ | ghar vic | at home / in the house |
| ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਤੋਂ | sṭeśan toṁ | from the station |
| ਬੱਜਾਰ ਵੱਲ | bajjār vall | toward the market |
| ਉੱਤੇ / ਹੇਠ | utte / heṭh | on / under |
| ਅੰਦਰ / ਬਾਹਰ | andar / bāhar | inside / outside |
| ਨੇੜੇ / ਦੂਰ | neṛe / dūr | near / far |
