nghìn is the northern form you'll hear from the course audio and most signage; southerners often say ngàn. Both are understood everywhere.

Money: đồng and prices

Vietnam's currency is the đồng (₫, written đ after amounts). Denominations are large — everyday prices run into the tens to hundreds of thousands — and prices are often quoted in 'thousands' with the đồng dropped.

Summary

không–mười, then regular compounding — with mốt (x1) and lăm (x5) in the ones place, linh (N) / lẻ (S) for skipped tens in hundreds, nghìn N/ngàn S for thousand, đồng prices quoted in thousands, and dates built ngày + day + tháng + month. Next: food and restaurants — where you'll spend those đồng.
