The four negators
| Negator | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| არ | ar — not (statements) | არ მესმის — I don't understand (ar mesmis) |
| ვერ | ver — cannot (ability) | ვერ მესმის — I can't hear / understand (ver mesmis) |
| აღარ | aghar — no longer · not anymore | აღარ მინდა — I don't want it anymore |
| ნუ | nu — don't (commands) | ნუ ეტყვი — don't tell him/her |
For beginners ar covers almost everything. Watch for ნუ in polite 'don't' phrases and ვერ in 'can't' phrases.
არ მესმის
Pronunciation ar mesmis
I don't understand
მე არ ვარ სტუმარი
Pronunciation me ar var st'umari
I am not a guest
ცხარე არ მინდა
Pronunciation tskhare ar minda
I don't want spicy food
Yes and no
დიახ
Pronunciation diakh
yes
არა
Pronunciation ara
no
კი
Pronunciation k'i
yes (informal, common)
დიახ (diakh) is formal yes; კი (k'i) is the everyday yes you'll hear constantly — even 'yes, yes' as კი-კი. არა (ara) is 'no' but consider softening with context — Georgians often answer 'no' with a full phrase (არ მინდა, 'I don't want it').
The question words
| Georgian | Translit | English |

Turning a statement into a question
For yes/no questions just use rising intonation — there's no special question marker. ეს ხინკალია 'this is khinkali' vs ეს ხინკალია? 'is this khinkali?'. For formal polite questions you can simply use თქვენ with the plural verb form or add a soft introductory phrase, but intonation alone works everywhere.
ღვინო გაქვთ?
Pronunciation ghvino gakvt?
Do you have wine?
საუზმე შედის?
Pronunciation sauzme shedis?
Is breakfast included?
ბარათით შეიძლება?
Pronunciation baratit sheidzleba?
Can I pay by card?
