Where bargaining applies

Markets, street stalls, tuk-tuk fares: negotiate. Malls, convenience stores, restaurants, metered taxis: fixed prices — asking for a discount will just be awkward. When in doubt, look for price tags: tagged = fixed.

Mini practice

Q1. Where should you NOT bargain?

Malls, convenience stores, restaurants — anywhere with price tags. Markets and tuk-tuks are fair game.

Q2. What's the standard bargaining phrase?

ลดได้ไหมครับ/คะ — "can you lower it?"

Q3. How do you ask for other colors?

มีสีอื่นไหมครับ/คะ — "are there other colors?"

Q4. สี vs สี่ — why does it matter?

สี (rising) = color; สี่ (low) = four. Same romanization, different tone — so "color" and "four" are different words.

Q5. How do you politely decline a deal?

ไม่เอาครับ/ค่ะ — "no thanks", or ดูที่อื่นก่อน — "I'll look around first".

Summary

  • Fixed-price vs negotiable: tags = fixed; markets/tuk-tuks = bargain.
  • Core loop: เท่าไหร่ → ลดได้ไหม → เอาครับ/ค่ะ.
  • Smile + light tone + willingness to walk away = good bargaining.
  • Next: getting around.
